The third reason why you shouldn’t have premarital sex is that the chances of contracting sexually transmitted diseases many of which are deadly are very high. Because you cannot know the sexual history of that young man or woman you’re trying to have sex with, it’s better to completely avoid it. Marriage conversely provides a better avenue for the partners to screen sexual histories and establish safety. Normally, marrying someone especially the Christian way is a process of time which provides sufficient opportunity before sexual life commences, for parties to screen sexual histories and follow safety measures meticulously before the nuptial chord is tied. This minimizes the chances of contracting STDs.

My interaction with a medical doctor some days ago indicated that some of the most deadly STDs include HIV/Aids, hepatitis B, and genital warts which is transmitted by Human Papilloma Virus and which often ultimately leads to cervical and anal cancer.

To begin with, I was surprised to learn that HIV is still quite rampant. He sees HIV patients in the hospital every day. Since I don’t interact with that environment always, I had thought that by now, there will be fewer people who live with HIV. It is established that there are still about 1.9 million people living with HIV today in Nigeria most of whom are women. My doctor friend even told me that generally, women are more susceptible to STDs than men. That by virtue of circumcision, for instance, the chances of a man contracting HIV is already reduced by around 60%.

There is currently no cure for Hepatitis B but drugs can keep the virus in check. My doctor friend told me that Hepatitis B initiates itself in the body more than even HIV.”

Genital Warts as well as penile/cervical cancer is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus. Those infected often will not know until when they then develop cervical cancer which is deadly usually later in life.

Who’s at risk of STD?

Anyone who is sexually active is at risk of an STD, regardless of gender, race, social class, or sexual orientation. That said, teenagers and young adults acquire STDs more easily than older people. By age 25, half of the sexually active adults get an STD. Having multiple sex partners also raises the risk.

Can Virgins Get STDs?

Yes they can, many STDs spread through any type of sexual activity, including skin-to-skin contact and oral sex. This is especially true of STDs that produce genital lesions or sores. I guess this is why the Bible didn’t just say don’t have sex, it warned against sexual immoralities which is wider than just penetrative sex. So my good friend, that wild kissing, caressing and other forms of sexual contacts are also included. Don’t come and brag to us that you’re a virgin whereas you’re occupied with all forms of unthinkable. I speak to both men and women. Purity is our goal and not merely virginity.

PREVENTING STDs

I’m informed by the same medical source referenced above that the best ways to avoid getting an STD are to abstain from any sexual contact and be in a monogamous, long-term relationship with an uninfected person. Now note *”monogamous, long-term relationship”*. Believe me, only marriage absolutely qualifies for this.

Now I come to a very interesting part. How safe are condoms? A reader of my previous post had challenged me with how safe condoms are. He believed he was safe with them.

So the same www.webmd.com has this to say on the safety of condoms.

“While condoms are effective in preventing the spread of some STDs, they are not perfect. Condoms are better at protecting against gonorrhea, Chlamydia, HIV, and trichomoniasis. But they offer less protection against herpes, syphilis, and genital warts (cervical cancer). These infections spread through contacts with skin lesions that are not covered by a condom. Finally, condoms offer virtually no protection against crabs and scabies.

Hope you done see am? In the end our own teaching of total abstinence till marriage was right. Those who are carrying deadly diseases about today also believed one time like you that they can never catch it despite their lifestyles. Can we please accept the wisdom of God in His saying, “let each one of you possess his own vessel in honor.”
